This spring Marian¹s honor societies welcomed 124 brilliant Marian
students. The Foreign Language Honor Societies and Mu Alpha Theta
recognition are high honors for every student invited to join.
³I am very proud of them because they have assimilated the four
skills to learn another language and theculture. They have taken the
course seriously and they become two people in one when they speak another
language,² said Spanish teacher, Señora Deisy Nicholson.
The Foreign Language Honor
Society ceremony took place on Wednesday, March 31 before school.
Students and their families were invited to the ceremony. There were 10
French students inducted into the Societe de Honoraire Francais, 18 Latin
students into the National Junior Classical League Honor Society, and 53
Spanish students into the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica.
These girls earned an ³A² average during three quarters of their
foreign language class this year. They were asked to pay an induction
fee, but were individually recognized formally with a candle lighting ceremony
and reception afterwards. ³It was fun to eat and talk with friends and at
the ceremony it was interesting to listen to the languages,² said new Spanish
inductee, junior Crystal Reyelts.
On April 28, 43 Marian girls were inducted into Mu Alpha Theta, a
National Honors Society for Mathematics. These girls paid also a $12 fee
and are asked to help tutor math students and compete in National Math
competitions throughout the year. The requirement was to maintain a 3.33
GPA in math courses during all years at Marian. The ceremony was held for
sophomores and juniors that applied and were accepted. It was also
followed by a bagel and juice reception. ³I think its an honor, math is
my favorite subject so it makes me excited,² said junior
KatieKersenbrock. Marian girls have always been known for hard work in
all academic areas and these Honors Societies provide another way to recognize
student achievement and excellence.
